Strategic Feedback and Self-Reflection

Strategic Feedback and Self Reflection

Feedback and self-assessment is a valuable learning tool as it helps learners identify their skill gaps, figure out where their knowledge is weak, see where to focus their attention in learning, set realistic goals, revise their work, track their progress, etc. This process helps students stay involved and motivated and encourages self-reflection and responsibility for their learning. When students reflect on their learning, they know exactly what worked well and where they needed help. They figure out the mistakes they made. This allows for fixing their mistakes and learning from them. We as teachers need to create this mistake‐safe culture where students realize that mistakes are natural and important.

Evaluating peers’ work can enhance the evaluators’ own learning and self-confidence. Peer involvement personalizes the learning experience, potentially motivating continued learning. Peer feedback is a key activity through which students use the structure and language of success criteria to appraise and provide feedback on the learning of others.
Shifting from feedback to feedforward can make a huge difference in helping the learners grow and how we grow as professionals. Feedback to feedforward provides feedback on current learning to inform what is needed to support future learning and raises students’ motivation.

Feedback has been identified as one of the most effective teaching practices. Effective teacher feedback offers opportunities for reflection and action. And so, feedback should be given in a way that the receiver can embrace. It encourages learning, promotes continuous improvement, and celebrates success.

Feedback on knowledge, conceptual understandings, and approaches to learning supports students moving towards their desired learning goals. When giving feedback, teachers should, therefore, focus on:
Feedback: How am I doing?
Feedforward: Where to next?

I created some personalized feedback and encouragement stamps and stickers for my class, and I feel that it is an effective teaching tool to give feedback and interact with the learners. Some stamps and stickers are designed as self-reflection tools for students.
These stamps and stickers help to give feedback and tell students how they can improve on assignments.
The best part is you can customize the design for the feedback stamp and sticker according to your requirement.
The attached video has some exemplars of stamps and stickers I successfully used in my classroom. You may try them too! Do get back to me if you have any questions.

I would like to share my expertise and help the teacher community by creating and personalizing stamps and stickers. You can collaborate with me on this project. Post your views in the comment section.
